FLOWTILLA 8.oo

Flowtilla play a sophisticated blend of psychedelic world groove jazz-funk: “The group takes a theme or a rhythm and they run with it. The band acquired a more defined sound after after joining creative forces with John on Drums, Cata on Vocals, and later refining touches with bassist Chicho and percussionist Tony. THE WAY 8.oo
Hot new band holding down Tuesday nights at The Layover in Oakland and will be the opening night band at Jupiter for this years Downtown Berkeley Music Fest on Aug 20, The Way are a bare bones soul-groove band led by multi-instrumentalist and composer Steve Taylor. Playing with a passion and honesty that's lost on most contemporary artists, Steve merges the heart-on-your-sleeve confessional style of Joni Mitchell, the northern soul of Van Morrison, and the pop hooks of T-Rex, and filters them through a progrock lense, creating a soundscape that's both modern and unironically influenced by 70's AM rock. Don't sleep...these guys smoke!

TEODROSS AVERY 8.oo
As a musician, Teodross “Teo” Avery stands as one who defines live music—best experienced front row, and full throttle. His commanding presence, on stage and off, reflects his musical ingenuity and skill. With an outstanding pedigree, both professionally and academically, Teo is a young saxophonist to watch, as evidenced by many of today's biggest names in music relying on his wide musical reach. “Trained as a jazzman but reared on old school hip hop . . . Avery's music flavors jazz's sense of purpose with hip hop's street smarts, which in turn introduces the hip hop nation to jazz's spirituality and prods hip hop to re-examine its current course.”

POLYGLOT QUARTET 8.oo

Formerly known as Code Name: Jonah, Polyglot Quartet draws from funk, jazz, avant garde, and Americana in equal measure. Moving between chill-worthy languid grooves and booty-worthy rumpus, they lay down a simultaneously thoughtful and straight-up greasy sound that would be equally comfortable meeting your mother or meeting your maker. They have a new album "Little Spirit Thing" up on iTunes and is currently featured in the New and Notable in the Jazz section.

Americana Unplugged: THE SKINNY 5.oo

Welcome back to Tanya brown and company! Gotta love this band for their all over the map approach to Americana. Sweet harmonies, dobro, banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, accordion, ukelele and a rockin bass line all thrown in the pot to make knee-slappin', tear jerkin' foot stompin' not-so traditional folk and bluegrass.

ZOE ELLIS 8.oo
From her time in the Mo'Fessionals & The Braids to her recent solo album recorded at Anna's Jazz Island, Zoë Ellis' was born to sing. For her, it's as natural and necessary as breathing. Currently when not performing with her own group, she collaborates with her brother, jazz saxophonist Dave Ellis, in Zadell, and lends her considerable talents to two Bay Area a cappella groups - Keith Terry's Slammin All Body Band and SoVoSo. She particularly enjoys SoVoSo's work with children and happily pursues this interest with her annual participation in Dmitri Matheny's musical story for children, "The SnowCat." She works with the teen choir at Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco, which also nourishes her gospel roots. These collaborations confirm the eagerness to extend her range and explore new directions that has marked Zoe's career.

CITIZENS QUARTET 8.oo

The Citizen's Quartet is a new jazz group based in San Francisco, with permanent members Elizabeth O'Hara on vocals and Caroline Chung on upright bass. Their style is based on the sultry, vintage, speakeasy sounds of Billie Holiday [tunes of the 30's & 40's], while intermixing other originals and bossa nova numbers. By fusing elements of the past with vibrant influences from today, Citizen's Quartet is bringing a new energy and pulse to San Francisco's live jazz scene.
